Giving Tuesday: How You Can Support Nonprofits
Giving Tuesday is right around the corner on December 1, 2020. It is a global movement centered on the idea of celebrating nonprofits, unleashing the power of people, and transforming communities and the world. December 1 is the day of giving and uniting everyone for the sole purpose of improving each other’s lives. When we learned about Giving Tuesday, we knew we had to be involved.
What are nonprofit organizations?
A nonprofit organization is very different from a business. A nonprofit organization is an entity that is not-for-profit. There are many different types of nonprofit organizations, but every organization has in common the goal of making the world a better place. Every nonprofit organization unites people together on a central cause in hopes of enacting change.
For example, Throw Pink is a nonprofit that supports women’s health initiatives and encourages women and girls to be active through disc golf and Ultimate Frisbee events nationwide. Our goal is to unite people to live healthier lifestyles through disc events and empower women and men by educating them on various health initiatives like breast cancer.
What is Giving Tuesday?
Have you ever seen the movie Pay It Forward? If not, here’s a quick synopsis: a social studies teacher gives his students an assignment to come up with an idea that will make the world a better place. One of his students invents the concept of “pay it forward.” That idea takes on a life of its own and becomes a worldwide movement. Giving Tuesday is a lot like that.
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement. It was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past 8 years, this idea has grown into a year-round global movement. It inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
The idea is simple really. Any kindness, no matter how big or small gets celebrated. Whether it be you helped your neighbor carry in groceries or a nonprofit that is changing the face of women’s health, it is all note-worthy.
This year, Throw Pink will be participating in Giving Tuesday. Soon, we will be posting #unselfie templates to celebrate. Don’t know what that is? Don’t worry! Keep reading and we will explain.
Low-Cost Ways to Help Nonprofits
Nonprofits rely on the generosity of people around the world to stay functioning. Giving Tuesday is a movement to empower people to spread positive messages and celebrate everyone’s generosity. Supporting nonprofits doesn’t always need to be in the form of a cash donation (not that we don’t always appreciate it!). If you have friends, access to social media and the internet, and other avenues for spreading information, then you can help a nonprofit! Here is a list of actions you can take to help support your local nonprofit organizations:
Donating
See the yellow button on our menu next to the ‘contact’ tab? That’s our donation tab. One of the most common ways of giving to a nonprofit is through a monetary donation.
Of course, there are other ways to donate too. Check with the charity to see what items they need. Throw Pink is always happy when we get monetary donations because we are able to continue raising awareness about women’s health-related issues and encouraging women and girls to be active in disc golf or ultimate frisbee. In fact, we do a little happy dance every time we get a donation!
Not only does donating really help the charity, but it also helps improve your mood and your wallet. Many donations are able to be written off of your taxes! Who doesn’t need a little tax break every once in a while?
Social Media, Please!
Don’t have any spare funds but still want to help? Let’s talk about Internet activism.
Social media is an amazing tool that lets us connect with people around the world to share ideas and opinions. We are constantly posting, taking pictures, tweeting, and all the other names for being active on social.
Try sharing posts by nonprofit organizations on your social media page and stories. This will not only help that nonprofit get the word out for their cause but help them reach an entirely new audience!
You can also make fun posts, pics, and videos yourself talking about social issues. Tag a nonprofit in the post so they can reshare (marketers love user-generated content!!). Don’t forget to use a little #activism in your post for a wider reach.
Throw Pink focuses on raising awareness about different women’s-health issues. We love seeing conversations on social media bringing light to depression, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and so many others.
The more we talk about these issues the more we destigmatize health problems. Let’s begin celebrating the determination of athletes and survivors alike.
W.O.M. – Word of Mouth Marketing
This goes hand-in-hand with social media. W.O.M. is basically just communicating with our networks to spread awareness. Resharing and posting about a nonprofit on your social pages is a form of W.O.M.
Talk with your friends about different nonprofit organizations and why you like and support them. Take our #unselfie templates. It’s a template for everyone to fill out and post on their stories or pages saying why they give… we hope to see yours!
Attend Events
Many nonprofits host events so their supporters and biggest advocates can come together to bond over a shared cause. These events allow everyone to discuss how to make their movements bigger.
Throw Pink has events all over the United States bringing awareness to different health issues and encouraging women and girls to be active. Attending events helps give you a network of people who advocate for the same cause as you.
For Throw Pinkers, that’s to change the face of women’s health through disc events nationwide. Attending our events will help you meet other disc golfers, either new or pro, to play with and advocate women’s health with (we promise Throw Pinkers rarely bite).
It’s Time to Take Action
We are so excited for GivingTuesday and seeing everyone band together to spread love and kindness. We may not be able to high-five each other, but a few encouraging words never hurt!
We hope you take the time to share a nonprofit’s posts, do an #unselfie, or something that makes the world a better place. Comment below on some more ways you like to help nonprofits! It’s not a global movement without you!
